Mendez dominated with his boxing and movement but in round four during an exchange Aragon sent him to the canvas. Mendez hurt Aragon in round five with good body punches, but in round six a head clash caused the wound that let to the fight being stopped.
Spence edges Porter to unify WBC/IBF welter titles
IBF welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) defeated WBC titlist “Showtime” Shawn Porter (30-3-1, 17 KOs) by twelve round split decision firefight in a unification clash on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Paulie Malignaggi defeated by MMA fighter
MMA veteran Artem Lobov defeated former world champion Paulie Malignaggi via five round unanimous decision in a bare-knuckle match on Saturday night at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall in Tampa. Judges unanimously scored the contest for the aggressive Lobov 48-47. Malignaggi’s longstanding social media “beef” with UFC star Connor McGregor led him to facing McGregor’s stablemate and friend Lobov.
Canelo unifies WBC/WBA/IBF middleweight titles
In a tactical but exciting bout, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) edged out a narrow unanimous decision victory over Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-3, 29 KOs) in front of 20,203 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Scores were 115-113, 115-113, 116-112 with many close rounds; any one of which scored the other way could have turned it into a well-deserved draw. With the victory, Canelo added Jacobs’ IBF belt to his own belts to become the unified WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight champion.
